Filming and development[]

On March 13, 2020, ABC announced that filming had been postponed due to the recent Coronavivrus (COVID-19) outbreak. Filming was originally scheduled to have begun that very day.

On June 17, 2020, ABC announced that this season would air in a new time slot, Tuesdays at 8 instead of Mondays.[1]

Filming is expected to start at the end of July, becoming the first non-scripted American television program to begin production since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Contestants and crew had to quarantine for two weeks before filming begins and test negative for COVID-19 regularly, while also having their temperature checked. Instead of starting at the Bachelor Mansion outside of LA and eventually traveling all over the world, the entire season was shot at one resort in Southern California. It the first time since season eight, that the show would not film at the Bachelor mansion, but at a resort on a quarantine themed format.

Filming began on July 19, 2020, with the first Rose Ceremony taking place that night.[2]

Chris Harrison left the set in order to take his son to college. Joelle "JoJo" Fletcher took his place while he quarantined again.

A premiere date of October 13, 2020, as well as an official poster was released on August 27, 2020. Along with these, ABC released a statement for the season: "Follow Clare's passionate, wild ride to to find her soul mate and the explosive turn of events that will have all of Bachelor Nation talking.". Chris Harrison also released two comments: "It's safe to say this season will be twice as good as any other!" and "I feel like this could be double trouble".

Casting and contestants[]

Clare Crawley was announced as the Bachelorette on March 2, 2020, on Good Morning America.

Before Clare was chosen as the Bachelorette, six other women were reportedly considered for the role. They were: Hannah Brown, who reportedly turned the offer down because the show wasn't paying her enough, Tia Booth, who reportedly even signed a contract and was the second choice behind Clare, Kelsey Weier, who also reportedly signed a contract and now is most likely to head to Paradise, Tayshia Adams, who also reportedly signed a contract, Kendall Long, who met with producers but never signed a contract, and finally Katie Morton, who met with producers but was only briefly considered.

On March 11, 2020, 32 potential contestants were announced. Chris Harrison later commented that the show would see recasts due to the delay in filming as well as the critique given by viewers of the shows, regarding the men's ages. Four of them were Matt James, Greg Grippo, Karl Smith, and James Clarke that were supposed to begin filming on March 13, 2020. However, Matt was later chosen as the bachelor for the 25th season of The Bachelor and making him is the show's first male black lead. Some of the contestants were later recast in future seasons: Greg and Karl on the 17th season, and James on the 19th season.

An updated cast list containing 42 potential contestants was released on July 15, 2020 including 17 from the original March 2020 list. The official list of 31 men were announced on September 29, 2020, on Facebook. Four new men were added into the cast on November 7, 2020 when Tayshia was introduced as the Bachelorette, bringing a total number of 35 contestants.

In late July, rumors began circulating that Clare was going to be replaced as she was being difficult during filming, even refusing to film because she had already fallen in love. They called in Tayshia to take her place. She replaced her during the episode that aired on November 5, 2020.

Contestants[]

The season began with 31 contestants. Following Clare's departure during week 3, four men added and Tayshia began with 20 contestants.

Future appearances[]

Contestant-to-be Matt James was set to appear for this season but was instead chosen as the bachelor for the 25th season of The Bachelor. He is the show's first male black lead.

Blake Moynes returned as a contestant on season 17 of The Bachelorette.

Brendan Morais, Ivan Hall, Kenny Braasch and Noah Erb returned for season 7 of Bachelor in Paradise.

Dale Moss is set to return for season 10 of Bachelor in Paradise.
